Partners to look into opportunities for a meeting and program activities space for the 7000 residents of Bayshore Proper = Minto Housing around Woodridge Crescent off Bayshore Drive.

Capacity Building and Civic Engagement:  Clara Freire provided a quick background to the idea of pro-active initiative for bringing partners together and looking into the capacity building needs. The objective was effectiveness and sustainability of the neighbourhood level positive developments.
Clara mentioned that the idea was to develop an approach for supporting residents and building their capacity, that could complement and support the work that Community Developers are doing in the neighbourhoods. Partner agencies had a range of experience and expertise. The question was: What can they do and build together?
Recapping the need to look into the best practices with regard to capacity building and civic engagement, Clara highlighted the importance of coming up with ideas for a network of agencies and experts to share strength and abilities and best support the work at the grassroots level.
United Way, PQCHC, City for All Women Initiatives (CAWI) and Leadership Ottawa made short presentation to present gap analysis in the context of CDF and present best practice that could address some of the identified gaps. Valerie Stam presented Community Developers' perspective.

  • The sub-group on capacity building will continue its work and come with a menu of possibilities and opportunities and an approach to effective capacity development for sustainable community engagement.
  • Community Table members agreed to officially recognize this initiative and group as a sub-group of the Table.

Community Table Sub-group on capacity building and civic engagement.

5.  Announcements.
CDF partners will come together for a one-day training workshop (September 14th or 15th, 2009 – one day repeated session) to share ideas, learn from one another, and hear how the latest trends in community development can strengthen our work in neighbourhoods.  Space is limited and reserved for individuals involved in CDF neighbourhoods.  Members of the system level tables are specifically requested to register (the online registration process scheduled to begin August 17) and participate.
SEOCHC invited members to a meeting they are having with Ottawa Police Services regarding the community policing program.  Recent changes in SEO have resulted in the need to meet.  It was suggested that other CDF communities could benefit from being present as a learning opportunity.

Next meeting date:

  • Members will be consulted about the possible future date via e-mail.
