Bayshore

 

BayshoreBayshore is one of the prioritized areas for implementation of the CDF approach. According to University of Ottawa's study the Bayshore area is bounded by the Ottawa River to the north, the Queensway to the south, Ridgevalley Drive to the east, and Holly Acres Road to the west.  [ click to View Bayshore area as per University of Ottawa area Study - PDF format 537 KB ].

However, to begin the community engagement process and do effective local level planning with residents, it was necessary to focus on specific neighbourhoods within the Bayshore area.

Selected Neighbourhood: The Steering Table has decided to engage residents in teh CDF process in the South West corner of the prioritized area (as shown in the map on the right), which is called Bayshore Proper and consists of Minto apartment building and garden houses along the Woodridge Crescent off Bayshore Drive.

Pinecrest Queesway Community Health Centre (PQCHC) is the lead coordinating organization which is closely working with all other agencies and partenrs mentioned here.Bayshore Map

The community in Bayshore has a rich history of community development.

Community members and service providers have been interacting and working together on several initiatives.

Bayshore has a number of strengths including a good linguistic mix, and a good percentage of residents who feel a sense of belonging in their area.

ESL sewing:
This group is made up of women who come together to sew and practice their English speaking skills. The group is offered by the Bayshore Catholic School and is held at the Bayshore field house.

Muslim Multicultural Community Services Ottawa (MCSO):
Specializes in career guidance and tutoring services, to help children (grades 1 –12) excel in English, French, Mathematics, Science, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. They help students get better grades and help them become better prepared for scholarships and the job market.
Their principles include: Quality, Reliability, Punctuality, and seeking the pleasure of Allah The Most High.

Bayshore Community Association (BCA):
The BCA is a group of community members who have developed a set of principles that they use to serve the needs of the Bayshore community in community-building activities (i.e. potlucks, recreational sports, and homework clubs). These community-building activities include kindness, generosity and tolerance to increase the quantity community members participating and to increase their desire to participate.

While working the principles that this group use are:
1). Train and empower others
2). Identify others who have the needed skills
3) Do the work themselves.  

The group has also set out a vision for the Bayshore community in 2010:
A friendly community where neighbours know one another, regularly visit each other, discuss the conditions of their families and community, and spend a few evenings a week both helping others with say things like groceries or English, or receiving assistance from the person across the hall to fix their computer or help their child with science homework”.

Bayshore Advisory Committee (BAC):
A group of service providers who have an investment in the Bayshore community. Includes members from BCA, the city of Ottawa parks and recreation, the Ottawa community police service, minto management corporation, local schools and Pinecrest Queensway community health centre. The aim of this group is collaborate and develop integrated planning around the needs of the Bayshore community. Meets monthly at the Minto Recreation Centre.
